Boredom is a Strong Emotion

Sadness and anger are often described as strong and sometimes overwhelming emotions. Strong emotions are hard to ignore. Probably the best way to define whether an emotion is a powerful one or a not is by recognizing just how difficult it is to ignore. I've found that most people will consider boredom more of a lack of emotion than anything else. I thoroughly disagree! I can tell you right now that I am intensely bored and it is very difficult to deal with.

I don't know about you, but the reason why boredom is so awful for me is because it's caused by a complete lack of interest in all my usual activities. Once the boredom sets in, without thinking about it, I start browsing the internet looking for something new to try and usually end up disappointed that the class, volleyball game, or church activity I want to attend is on another day. So then I feel trapped in my boring, uninteresting life and start watching the clock, wondering why things that were exciting yesterday aren't even remotely interesting today.

When I was little, I used to get bored over summer vacation and I remember my Mom having no sympathy for my problem. She'd tease me saying, "I'll give you something to do. Here, wash some dishes!" But I can't help but sympathize whenever I hear a kid complain about how bored they are. Boredom is HORRIBLE. Yes, there are many things that are worse, but no one should ignore the fact that having no desire to do the things that usually make you happy is a horrible feeling.

It feels as though your trapped in a mind that has no fun ideas, no excitement about little things. When you're in a true state of boredom, everything is just so bland and uninteresting. Granted it doesn't last, but when you have it, it's pretty intense.

Whether your someone who lives for accomplishing big goals or the type who appreciates the little things life has to offer, boredom is powerful enough to diminish the enjoyment of everything that makes your life feel worth living.

Thank goodness it doesn't last, but don't make light of it when someone tells you they're bored. You may not be able to help, but just remember the last time you felt that way. Just like any other intense emotion, some can hide it better than others, but there is no denying, boredom is awful for everyone.
