Harry Potter, Tron & Toy Story Dances Featured at Shelley Irish Dance Recital

It’s one of our biggest shows all year. Not only because it draws the biggest crowd, but The Shelley School Spring Recital has more dancers performing on stage than at any other time. The show is so big that every year Tina Shelley has to hold the final dress rehearsal at a public recreation center since the Shelley studio is far too small to have all the students rehearsing at once!

In preparation for the show, each class was given special group choreography to be performed at this show alone. It’s a refreshing experience since most of the dance training we receive is for solo competition. The recital gives everyone in the school an opportunity to perform a group number to entertain an audience, rather than impress a judge.

This year all the classes danced choreography based on a movie theme. One class performed a dance to Toy Story, another class dressed in robes and armed themselves with wands for a Harry Potter themed hard shoe dance. Other performances included Mulan, Cars, The Princess & the Frog, a Bollywood dance, and our championship class performed a hard shoe dance set to the music of the movie Tron. To create the same look of the costumes worn by the characters in the movie, we dressed in black clothes covered in neon tape, turned down the lights, and our costumes glowed in black lights. It was quite a sight and I think the audience really enjoyed it!

By far it was our best Spring Recital yet. It’s always a delight to be a part of a really entertaining show and I can’t wait to do it again next year!
