This year the Crossroads Feis was more fun that usual. First of all, it’s really great to be scheduled to dance in the morning. Most of the time, the 18 and over dancers have to wait around all day to dance, but on Saturday I got to dance at 9:00 AM! It was wonderful to dance early in the day when I was fresh and warmed up. I felt ready to dance when my time came. I know my dances well and have been working on stamina the past few months, so when I got up on stage I wasn’t nervous at all, just excited to perform.
I didn’t make any mistakes and was on a high the rest of the day after I finished. I didn’t place in the top 3 overall, but I did rank 1st in my soft shoe dance. I’ve never done so well in Open Championships and it was proof that I’ve improved a lot in the past year. I also competed in 3 specials at this Feis: the Treble Reel Special, an alternate Set Dance Special (I placed 5th), and my absolute favorite, the Once Upon A Time Costume Special.
Four other championship dancers and I from the The Shelley School of Irish Dance prepared a 32-bar hard shoe team dance dressed as the Wicked Witches of the West. We put on striped tights, black dresses and ratted our hair. It was my favorite competition at the Feis. We worked on the dance for two weeks so we would match perfectly and I think it went really well! Here’s a video of our Wicked Witches of The West dance. Enjoy!
We won 2nd place in the Once Upon A Time Special (even though many people insisted we should have won 1st). This Feis was a great warm-up for The Western Region Oireachtas next month. After such a great time, I feel more ready for the Oireachtas than ever before.
